Dr. Joan Sauvageau, our plastic surgeon who puts people first on the South Shore of Montreal

As a teenager, Dr. Sauvageau dreamed of a career in theatre. Driven by a deep desire to help others, she instead turned to medicine. She trained at the University of Sherbrooke and discovered a passion for plastic surgery. From there, she headed to Winnipeg to complete her fellowship in Reconstructive Oncology Microsurgery (to treat breast cancer and sarcoma), including breast reconstruction.

Upon returning to Quebec, she worked at Charles-Lemoyne Hospital on the South Shore of Montreal for several years. At the same time, she performed aesthetic plastic surgeries every month in various rented hospital operating rooms following the demand of her growing aesthetic clientele. Dr. Sauvageau loved witnessing the surge of self-confidence that these surgeries brought to her patients. Word-of-mouth became her main source of new patients, a testament to her expertise. And her waiting list is growing.

Dr. Sauvageau is a big proponent of work-family balance. In addition to her career as a cosmetic surgeon, she is the proud mother of three young children. During the COVID pandemic, when operating room availability was considerably reduced, she decided to devote herself more to her passion, cosmetic surgery. Demand was also growing at a steady pace.

Based in Boucherville, on the South Shore of Montreal, she became increasingly interested in medico-aesthetic care, which kept her very busy. She performed breast augmentations, breast lifts, abdominoplasty (for flatter abdominal area) and blepharoplasty (surgery for drooping eyelids). These procedures are much less complex than those she is used to doing in a hospital setting, but she thrived on the relationships she built with her patients.

“” like connecting with my patients. Building relationships with them comes easy to me, and I get a lot out of it personally. I really take my time to get to know my patient during each consultation and I am 100% attentive to each patient’s needs. I believe this is a big part of my success as a cosmetic surgeon.”

With her compassionate approach and the quality of her renowned expertise, Dr. Sauvageau decided to meet the increasing demand in the field of cosmetic surgery by joining the large and qualified team at Clinique K in November 2022. She opened a private clinic in Vieux-Longueuil, making her the only female plastic surgeon on the South Shore of Montreal.

“I am so lucky to have found my space in Vieux-Longueuil, a stone’s throw from my home, and to be able to meet the growing demand of my patients who live on the South Shore of Montreal. People identify with me because I am very accessible. And I’m definitely not a sales person. It’s so much better that way. My patients can sense my integrity.”

Dr. Sauvageau is also distinguished by her ability to say ‘no’ to surgeries. She advocates natural results while meeting the expectations expressed by each patient.

“I want to help my patients feel better about their bodies, and regain confidence and self-esteem. For example, when I perform a breast augmentation, I listen to my patients and reassure them about the outcome. I only do surgeries that keep the breasts looking natural.”

What keeps her motivated? “When my patient comes to see me for a follow-up and tells me that things are better with her boyfriend, that she feels happy, that she has regained her libido, or when a patient sends me a picture of herself in a bikini after a tummy tuck, feeling confident with her flat stomach, that’s my real payoff!”

Most of her patients come to follow-up appointments with a transformed attitude. They demonstrate greater confidence in their appearance.

“When I see my patients at their six-month post-operative follow-up, they simply shine. It’s so gratifying to see that. The luminous look of men and women after correcting droopy eyelids, or the enhanced breasts that they adore, it makes it all worthwhile!”
